Developmental Editing

£0.018 per word

This is the big-picture stage. Sometimes called structural or substantial editing.

I’ll help you refine stories and characters your readers will fall for. 💜 This means, I’ll carefully analyse key aspects of your manuscript to ensure it resonates with readers and leaves a lasting impression. Every suggestion I make will aim to highlight the best of your story, while staying true to the heart of what you’ve created.

My analysis covers:

  • Chapter sequencing and scene transitions

  • Character development

  • Clichés and metaphors

  • Dialogue

  • Heartbreak and emotional payoff (story, character, and relationship arcs)

  • Pacing

  • Plot and Theme

  • Point of View

  • Sex and intimate scenes

  • Show and Tell

  • Stereotypes, misrepresentation, and marginalisation

I use the comments function to dive into details and bring out the best in each scene.

In addition, my extensive editorial letter will highlight your manuscript’s strengths and pinpoint areas for improvement. I’ll provide actionable guidance for your revision process.

Manuscript Critique

£0.008 per word

A manuscript critique is a more affordable alternative to a full developmental edit, giving you detailed, actionable feedback on your work without the higher cost.

You’ll receive the same comprehensive editorial letter, covering strengths, weaknesses, and suggestions for improvement, as you would with a developmental edit. However, there will be no in-line comments on your manuscript.

Manuscript Assessment

£75

Sometimes called beta reading.

Get a general overview of your work-in-progress.

You’ll receive a short editorial letter (approx. 3–5 pages), without any comments on your manuscript. This letter highlights what’s working well and what may need improvement, evaluates how your story meets genre and reader expectations, and offers advice on your next steps.

I’m also happy to address any specific questions you may have or tailor the report to focus entirely on those areas.

Come back within six months for another edit, and I’ll deduct this fee.

For manuscripts of up to 90,000 words.

Line & Copy-editing

£0.014 per word

I’ll tidy up grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and make sure your story and characters stay consistent. I’ll refine your prose to strengthen your unique voice while keeping flow and clarity for your readers in mind.

  • Clarity and flow

  • Clichés and metaphors

  • Consistency

Includes an in-depth editorial report, fact-checking, and a style sheet.

In my editorial report, I’ll provide an analysis of your prose, explain my suggestions, and offer advice to improve your line craft.

You will receive three manuscript files at the end of my edit:

  1. One document with tracked changes and comments enabled.

  2. One has all changes accepted but comments still visible.

  3. One ‘clean’ version with all changes accepted and no comments.

Proof-editing

£0.010 per word

Proof-editing is a combination of copy-editing and proofreading. I will be the last editor working on your manuscript.

You’ve honed your line craft. You use strong verbs to drive your sentences and avoid unnecessary adverbs. You balance showing and telling with finesse, and your pacing flows naturally with the rhythm of each sentence.

Please provide the full manuscript upon enquiring. If I find that more intervention would be beneficial, I may recommend a line and copy-edit instead. Learn more about this service.

My proof-editing scope:

  • Clarity

  • Consistency

  • Dialogue tags and action beats

  • Grammar

  • Missing and repeated words

  • Potential copyright, libel, or sensitive content

  • POV

  • Punctuation

  • Repetition

  • Spelling, hyphenation and capitalisation

  • Standard formatting in Word with Styles: setting indentation, paragraph styles, and section breaks consistently

  • Stereotypes, misrepresentation, and marginalisation

  • Syntax

This service does not include a line edit, an editorial report, a style sheet, or fact-checking.

You will receive three documents at the end of my edit:

  1. One document with tracked changes and comments enabled.

  2. One has all changes accepted but comments still visible.

  3. One ‘clean’ version with all changes accepted and no comments.

Proofreading

£0.008 per word

This is the final pass for any lingering errors before publication. Only available for manuscripts that have already received a line/copy-edit. You will provide a style sheet for me to follow.

I will check for:

  • Capitalisation and hyphenation

  • Consistency

  • Formatting (headings, page numbering, paragraph layout, section breaks)

  • Grammar

  • Missing and repeated words

  • Punctuation

  • Typos and spelling errors

  • Widows and orphans

When I proofread your manuscript in MS Word, you will receive two documents at the end:

  1. One document with tracked changes and comments enabled.

  2. One ‘clean’ version with all changes accepted and no comments.

I’m happy to proofread any fiction genre.

Tailored Package

Looking for something different? I’m happy to offer a bespoke service that fits both your budget and your manuscript’s requirements.

Format

Editing is completed in Microsoft Word with Track Changes enabled.

For proofreading, I’m happy to work either with Word or PDF files.

If you choose PDF, I’ll use comments to highlight any lingering errors, and you’ll need to apply the corrections on your end.
