On a Personal Note: Trying Something New

By the time you’re reading this, I’m already out of office. I’m really looking forward to a few days off after some busy months.

This month, I’ve been working on a contemporary romance as well as a historical romantasy, and both stories (and their characters!) are still lingering in my mind. One of the best parts of editing is getting to spend time in so many wonderful fictional worlds.

Towards the end of July, things became a little quieter, so I decided to try something new: offering a pay-what-you-can proofreading slot. It won’t become a regular service, but I thought it was a nice way to make professional editing more accessible while making good use of a quieter period. It was an interesting experiment, and I may well offer something similar again in the future, so stay tuned.

Looking ahead, I still have availability for August 2026, while September and October are already filling up nicely. I’ve also been thinking about a better way to display my availability on my website. I experimented with creating a calendar using tables, but it quickly became more faff than it was worth – and I know I’d struggle to keep it updated in the long run! So, for now, I’ve opted for something simpler.

Sunshine by Emma Ellis

So far, I’ve only read The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson, so I was excited to finally start my Mistborn adventure. Sanderson’s writing style always draws me in from the very first paragraph.

Sunshine by Emma Ellis was heartbreaking. As much as I’m not a fan of LLMs, I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of androids (like in the video game Detroit: Become Human). Ellis’s world-building is much darker, though.

Letting my spinning wheel decide my next read is fun... but I rarely get to read a series back to back. So I may have to make a few exceptions to the rule!
