Heat Levels in Romance: From Sweet to Explicit

Romance novels vary widely in their approach when it comes to the physical intimacy between characters. Whether your story is gentle and sweet or steamy and passionate, understanding the different heat levels can help you connect with the right readers.
Here’s a breakdown of the different heat levels you might encounter in romances:
01 Clean Romance
Clean romances focus primarily on the emotional connection between the characters. Characters may kiss, but any sexual content is avoided, as well as violence and strong language (e.g., cursing).
Religious stories, such as Christian romances, are often clean. However, it’s important to note that not every clean romance has a religious background.
The term ‘clean’ has its issues as it can imply that physical intimacy is ‘dirty’ or ‘taboo’. At present, there isn’t an alternative to distinguish these types of romances from sweeter ones. Not everyone is aware of the subtle difference between ‘sweet’ and ‘clean’ romances, and often, the lines between them blurry.
02 Sweet Romance
Sweet romances often include more overt physical affection without going into details. The characters may share lingering kisses, tender embraces, and perhaps even hints of sexual tension, but never venture further. Off-page or non-graphic conflict may be mentioned, and mild profanity may occur.
03 Closed Door
In a closed-door romance, sexual tension builds throughout the story, but the physical intimacy happens off the page. Readers are aware that the characters engage in sex, but the scenes are not described – the ‘door’ remains closed. However, the emotional and physical build-up can still be intense!
04 Fade to Black
Fade to black is often used interchangeably with ‘closed door’, though there’s a slight difference. Readers may follow characters into intimate moments (e.g., intense kissing, cuddling, or even light petting), but before anything more explicit happens – such as touching or mentioning genitalia – the scene ends, leaving the continuation of their sexual encounter to the reader’s imagination.
In closed-door romances, the scene ends earlier, whereas fade-to-black moments often take readers right up to the point where things would get more hands-on.

05 Open Door
In open-door romances, sexual content is openly described, but there’s still variation in how it’s presented: Some books offer sensual, emotionally rich depictions of intimate moments, while others may be more straightforward and explicit. For example, Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander vs Ali Hazelwood’s Deep End. Two very different approaches regarding sex scenes, yet both fall under the ‘open door’ umbrella.
While open-door romances don’t shy away from steamy scenes, they still emphasise the characters’ emotional journeys alongside the physical ones.
Chilli Ratings
Some readers and authors use chilli ratings (🌶) from 1 to 5 to differentiate the level of spice in romances. Keep in mind, though, that chilli ratings are subjective – what you rate as 5 chillies may be 3 chillies for someone else, or vice versa. I’d suggest including a reference point when using chilli ratings to help readers gauge what to expect!
What’s Better? Do I Have to Include Steamy Scenes in Order to Be Successful?
Each heat level serves a different purpose, and there’s no right or wrong choice when it comes to what works for your story, your readers, and, more importantly, for yourself.
It’s common for authors to doubt themselves when they see how popular steamy books are and wonder if they need to add explicit scenes to succeed. Take a deep breath – you don’t have to write sex scenes if that’s not what you want to do. For every reader who enjoys spicy scenes, there are others who prefer to skip them or even avoid books that include them. Your romance is valid at any heat level, and the right readers will find you!
